Knoppix is a Linux distribution designed to be booted live from various storage media. Although many distributions now do this, it was notable as being one of the first. Originally developed in Germany by Klaus Knopper.

OS Information

When starting a program it is loaded from the media and decompressed into a RAM drive. The decompression is transparent and on-the-fly.

Although Knoppix is primarily designed to be used as a Live media OS, it can also be installed on a hard disk like a typical operating system. Computers that support booting from various storage devices can load Knoppix from them.

Knoppix, or KNOPPIX is an operating system based on Debian designed to be run directly from external devices, one of the first of its kind for any operating system. Knoppix was developed by Linux consultant Klaus Knopper. When starting a program, it is loaded from the optical disc and decompressed into a RAM drive. The decompression is transparent and on-the-fly.

Knoppix can be used to copy files easily from hard drives with inaccessible operating systems. To quickly and more safely use Linux software, the Live OS can be used instead of installing another OS.

Knoppix mostly consists of free and open source software, but also includes proprietary software.

Uninstalling Knoppix

Knoppix may be removed from your storage media, by reverting it to a non-partitioned state.

Step 1 - Back up your data to a remote source. Assure that you can access it successfully before overwriting the original.

Step 2 - Boot your device from the media used to install Knoppix. The drive manager will display a partition containing the installed system. Select "delete partition" to erase it. (Warning, this will remove Knoppix.) For complete data security, physically deconstruct the installation media to a point where it is unrecoverable.
