The next version of fedora is going through rounds of testing for the upcoming release. The window for public testing begins October 26th to November 2nd. An alpha release is the initial offering of the software for public testing. The fedora release cycle can be considered on the bleeding edge with a new release going live every six months.

The announcement list is always exclusive for the Fedora Community. Please, visit the past announcements at[1]
Jared K. Smith announced[2]:

“Today we held our readiness meeting for the Alpha release of Fedora 14. As you may know, this is a meeting with representatives from the Development, Release Engineering, and Quality Assurance teams. In these meetings, we evaluate the list of blocker bugs and give a “go” or “no go” signal on the state of the Fedora release.

You can read the minutes of the meeting[3], but in short the decision was made that the release has not passed its release criteria[4]. When this happens, the entire release schedule is slipped by a week, and we work to get things in better shape for the next meeting. We’ll get the schedule[5] updated in the next day or so, but in general this means that our general availability date for Fedora 14 has now gone from October 26th to November 2nd.

During composition of any further release candidates, the Fedora Release Engineering and Quality Assurance teams plan to be quite conservative in the updates they pull into the release candidates, so that we don’t inadvertently create more blocker bugs. I’d also like to thank those who have really pushed hard to try to get the Alpha into shape. In particular, the Release Engineering team put in a lot of extra hours to compose our release candidates, and the QA team did a fantastic job of testing the release candidates and knocking out as many blocker bugs as possible.

While I regret the fact that the schedule has slipped, I’m confident it was the right decision to ensure that Fedora 14 is a rock-solid release.

An operator of bot networks was arrested, in a case where the investigators got the upper hand. Many computers, mostly running the Windows operating system have countless hidden security holes which may be exploited by anyone from the North Korean government, to a small town bot army enthusiast. The key point in this case is that computer security is paramount, and the root cause is often not identified. Operating systems produced without transparency, that is the code is compiled so you cant actually read it, will always have a perpetual source of security vulnerabilities.

Only operating systems with source code released to the public have shown to be secure, a lesson well learned by most running servers.

A 20-year-old Australian man has been charged with infecting more than 3,000 computers around the world with a virus designed to capture banking and credit card data, police said Thursday.

The man, whose name will not be released until he appears in an Adelaide court on Sept. 4, has been charged with several computer offenses that carry prison terms of up to 10 years, South Australia state police Detective Supt. Jim Jeffery said in a statement.

Police also uncovered information that will identify other offenders, Jeffery said.

The man, who lives in the state capital, Adelaide, is also accused of illegally creating a capacity to disable computer systems by bombarding them with unwanted traffic from up to 74,000 computers he controlled around the world. This type of sabotage is known as a distributed denial of service attack.

Police have not said whether the man allegedly used stolen banking information to commit identity fraud.

The arrest followed a three-month investigation involving state and federal computer crime detectives.

With a network like that, one could cause quite a stir.

One of the latest contenders in the Linux twitter arena is Gwibber. It is an open source microblogging client for GNOME developed with Python and GTK. The program supports Twitter, Jaiku, Facebook, Pownce, Identi.ca and other popular social web services.

Gwibber Client

But then let’s face it, Twitter’s not the only micro-blogging platform out there, and it’s definitely not the only program that lets you have status updates. That’s why having a Twitter-only client doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense. I was using Twitux before, but since then I joined a fully open-source micro-blogging platform called Identi.ca. Probably by virtue of being open-source software, it has a large Linux-user population, so I had to join. And Twitux doesn’t work with it. Enter Gwibber.

Gwibber is a status-update client for a lot of services. I’m just using it for Twitter and Identi.ca, but it also works for Digg, Jaiku, Facebook, Pownce, and Flickr. It’s actively developed, and the developer (Ryan Paul of ArsTechnica) seems to be listening to user input, so that’s definitely a plus.

Right now, though, I just really like its flexibility. It uses WebKit for rendering, so it can get pretty fancy. Take a look at the screenshot below. I configured it to use dark blue for Identi.ca updates and light blue for Twitter updates, so they match each site’s theme. You can pick whatever color you want for each, but I thought it was easier to remember this way.

Please note, though, that Gwibber is still in Alpha. I haven’t noticed any issues with it, but being alpha software does mean there are big changes happening fairly often. I think duplicate detection was added last week. I’m with everyone that’s requesting a “Replies” tab. Ryan says he’ll make it a priority.

Often it might be necessary to remove files older than a certain age on a Linux machine. This uses the bash programming language which is native to most Linux distributions. It can be run on a regular basis by scheduling it with the crontab, or run once to clean out old files. The time variable can be changed to suit the user’s needs, more examples can be found at the Save Lono software engineering help site.

This script removes every *.wav file older then one minute in the directory it is executed. This script is very useful and can be used with the cron daemon for regular file removal.

#!/bin/bash

find ./*.wav -type f -mmin +1 -exec rm {} \;

Also we can adjust this for days rather than minutes by changing ‘-mmin +1′ to ‘-mtime +10′. This would delete .wav files in the working directory that were older than 10 days.

More phones have been released by NEC, Panasonic and Motorola that employ the linux operating system. These phones seem to be more feature phone than smartphone. The market for software platforms on cellphones is led by Nokia’s Symbian operating system, but it has lost much ground over the last year to Apple and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd.

Computer operating system Linux has had the most success with servers sofar, but its role is increasing with the LiMo platform and Google is using Linux for its Android platform.

Linux is the most popular type of free or so-called open source computer operating system available to the public to be used, revised and shared. Linux suppliers earn money selling improvements and technical services and Linux competes directly with Microsoft Corp, which charges for its Windows software and opposes freely sharing its code.

A feature phone, at least by my definition, may have a number of very exciting features, but you cannot add functionality to your phone by installing apps, other than what someone may have written in Java. Those type of apps are usually games. A smart phone would be based on a platform that is intended to be expanded with third party apps, can sync with the cloud and has a rich set of development tools for developers.

LiMo also said Japanese mobile carrier KDDI Corp and touch screen company Immersion Corp had joined the not-for-profit foundation. But LiMo has been missing support from the largest cellphone vendors. So far smaller phone makers NEC, Panasonic and Motorola Inc have unveiled in total 42 phones using its software. At the same time, all the top handset vendors, except Nokia, have promised to produce phone models running Android software.

The world’s second- and third-largest cellphone vendors, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and LG Electronics Inc, are members of LiMo, but have not unveiled commercial models.

LiMo hopes to benefit from its focus on giving greater say over software development to telecommunications operators. Its key members — Vodafone Group Plc, France Telecom SA’s Orange, Japan’s NTT DoCoMo Inc, South Korea’s SK Telecom Co Ltd, Telefonica SA and U.S. operator Verizon Wireless, a venture between Verizon Communications In and Vodafone — have pledged to introduce LiMo phones in 2009.

Blowing opponents up with futuristic weapons is what call of Duty 4 is all about. With modern times and international affairs becoming more interesting, the 1940s games have had more competition from more futuristic titles. Perhaps that’s why Call of Duty 4 has a new subtitle, Modern Warfare.

By bringing things into a fictionalized story that still seems fairly plausible, the developer has made a much heavier game. But COD 4 is more than just an updated setting. It’s also an amazing multiplayer first-person shooter and a great but brief single-player campaign with the visual chops to make it a standout shooter in an era filled with seemingly dozens of standout shooters.

First Person Shooter

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare focuses on the variation of modern warfare as an infantry soldier by allowing the player to control soldiers in a vast number of different scenarios, straying away from the constant straightforward action of previous Call of Duty titles and allowing for both heavy intensity fire fights and slower paced drama styled intensity. The series’ move to modern warfare has also introduced a variety of new modern weapons and technology to be introduced to the Call of Duty franchise. Such showcased weapons and attachments include grenade launchers, and the AN/PEQ-2 Target Pointer for use in conjunction with night vision goggles, MP5SD submachine guns, and the FGM-148 Javelin portable anti-tank guided missile among many others.

The story is told from a perspective of a British 22nd Special Air Service Regiment operative in Russia and an American 1st Force Recon operative in the Middle East. The game also features a flashback mission set 15 years ago in Pripyat, Ukraine, an abandoned city within the Chernobyl Zone of Alienation, which features a younger incarnation of Captain Price from 22nd SAS Regiment, the only character to appear in both of the first two games of the Call of Duty series.

Short single player, intense multi player action

The only real catch is that the single-player is almost shockingly short. If you’ve been keeping up with this style of game, you’ll probably shoot your way to the credits in under five hours. While you can raise the difficulty to give yourself more of a challenge, the main thing this does is make the enemies frustratingly deadly, which sort of detracts from the fun.

COD4 Modern Warfare on Linux

While it may have a lack of single-player quantity, it makes up for most of it with its quality. The game tells its story from multiple perspectives, and you’ll play as a new British SAS operative as well as a US Marine. The campaign takes you from a rainy night out at sea on a boat that’s in the process of sinking to a missile silo where it’s on you to save millions from an unsavory nuclear-powered death. Along the way, there are plenty of jaw-dropping moments where you’ll look around the room for someone to whom you can say, “I can’t believe that just happened.” In a world filled with war games in which the good guys come out unscathed and the world is left at total peace, Call of Duty 4 will wake you up like a face full of ice water.

The action in the campaign is usually very straightforward. You have a compass at the bottom of your screen, and the direction of your current objective is very plainly marked. But getting from point A to point B is never as simple as running in a straight line, as you’ll be conducting full-scale assaults in Middle Eastern countries by moving from house to house, taking out what seems like a never-ending stream of enemy troops along the way.

You’ll also get an opportunity to raid Russian farmhouses in search of terrorist leaders, disguise yourself as the enemy, and, in one sequence, don a brushlike ghillie suit and crawl through the brush as enemy troops and tanks roll right past you. It’s a breathtaking moment in a campaign filled with breathtaking moments. Unfortunately, it’s about half as long as the average shooter, and there are plenty of sequences where you wish there were just one or two more hills to take.

Multi player offers tons of rampaging excitement with futuristic weapons, who could ask for more.

At one point or another in a gamers career, they might have tried the World of Warcraft and felt the pull of the basement couch. A player named Alex reveals his journey through the raiding establishment, and provides insight into the game’s culture.

Wow installs on Linux via the wine emulator.

Ah, Paris

World of Warcraft Paris Map

“So anyway, i play a Retribution Paladin called Effy on Ragnaros EU in a guild called Le Damage, a few nice things about it is it’s a fun guild with lots of progression, ranked pretty well in the world, server first and the people i think are great, enough to make me book a plane ticket to Amsterdam for the 4th IRL meeting on the 5th of august this year, which im really looking forward to!

So far after reading this you probably think im some sort of oblivious optimist, im not (at all), in fact quite the opposite most of the time, but i thought it would be nice to start with a “happy” opener and dont get me wrong im not a pessimist either, but there’s always things that are going right and wrong.

I saw a blog made by another guy who said that WoW has a “nerdy” image to it, which, i cant really deny to be honest, it has, and when you try to tell someone what it’s about, you generally just get a strange look, and a “so you run around imagining your a wizard all day?!”, i’ve kind of given up on telling people what im doing on a sunday night when im raiding. Don’t get me wrong, il never deny it (as the other blogger said some people do) as im in fact quite proud that im not out there drinking heavily/doing drugs and breaking the law anymore because i discovered WoW and i honestly have my world (IRL) to thank for it (more about that another time…..maybe), although a lot of people see WoW as a sick addiction, even if it is, your not hurting anyone by playing in moderation, breaking the law, or killing yourself.

Escaping from WoW

But the “nerdy” image will never be broken from WoW, with 13 million players, i guess to anyone that doesnt play WoW, we’re just 13 million nerds, living in our mother’s basements with no life, eating fast food and seriously lacking a social life. The sterotype of course would not be there, if at least a small handful of players were like that, in fact im willing to bet a good portion of them are, but that doesnt mean to say they arent good people, infact there probably better people than a lot iv dealt with, and even been “friends” with in the past.

Couch vs. Real Life

I have to say i’m pretty happy with my life at the moment, its not as exciting as i would like it to be, id like more things to happen around me, and to involve me, but life can’t always be a roller coaster, and i guess the best way to describe how im feeling with my life at the moment, is content. I have a beautiful girlfriend who iv recently moved in with, close family, good, honest friends and hobby’s that i consider myself rather good at, and before you go making judgements that im at all arrogant or elitist, its completley the opposite, i realise there is a fine line between arrogance and confidence, but i think im pretty safely on the side of the latter.

In all this is just an intro into who i am, what i do, where i am mentally at the moment, so dont think this is it, il be writing again soon with some pictures and hopefully you enjoyed what i wrote, as i enjoyed writing it, so, even if you didnt, il still keep writing ”

Wine is a program that allows windows games to be played on linux. Supported titles include World of Warcraft, Eve Online, and many more. It creates a special environment for the game
http://www.winehq.org/

Wine is a translation layer (a program loader) capable of running Windows applications on Linux and other POSIX compatible operating systems. Windows programs running in Wine act as native programs would, running without the performance or memory usage penalties of an emulator, with a similar look and feel to other applications on your desktop.

The Wine project started in 1993 as a way to support running Windows 3.1 programs on Linux. Bob Amstadt was the original coordinator, but turned it over fairly early on to Alexandre Julliard, who has run it ever since. Over the years, ports for other Unixes have been added, along with support for Win32 as Win32 applications became popular.

Wine makes it possible to take advantage of all the Unix strong points (stability, flexibility, remote administration) while still using the Windows applications you depend on.

Unix has always made it possible to write powerful scripts. Wine makes it possible to call Windows applications from scripts that can also leverage the Unix environment to its full extent.

Wine makes it possible to access Windows applications remotely, even if they are a few thousand miles away.

Wine makes it economical to use thin clients: simply install Wine on a Linux server, and voila, you can access these Windows applications from any X terminal.

Wine can also be used to make existing Windows applications available on the Web by using VNC and its Java client.

Wine is Open Source Software, so you can extend it to suit your needs or have one of many companies do it for you.
